What are shooting games?

Shooting games put a weapon in your hands and ask you to hit targets before they hit you. That covers a lot of ground: first-person shooters (FPS) where you see through the hero's eyes, sniper games about one careful shot, top-down and side-scrolling blasters, tank battles and classic space shoot 'em ups where the screen fills with bullets.

What makes a good one?

Good shooters have honest aim - the shot lands where the crosshair was - and enemies that telegraph what they are about to do. Weapon upgrades between levels add a reason to keep going, and a clear radar or mini-map stops you getting lost in bigger maps.

How to choose: beginners and experienced players

Beginners usually have the most fun with sniper games and arcade blasters: they are slower, or the game aims for you, and one level takes a minute or two. If you already play shooters, try the FPS and multiplayer arena games that use W A S D plus mouse aim. Most first-person shooters here are made for a keyboard and mouse.
